The search for Hook is on in the second half of Once Upon a Time: Season 5, which will also introduce viewers to the ABC series’ take on Hercules, Megara and Hades. That’s only scratching the surface of what’s ahead for the show, though.
Beyond the debate of whether Rumplestiltskin can be redeemed again, here are 12 teases from the cast and creators of Once Upon a Time about what can be expected from the second half of Season 5 — and beyond.
1. How Long it Will Take to Find Hook
Apparently “how long” isn’t the right question. According to Jennifer Morrison, “We definitely find him, but saving him is a different thing than finding him.”
2. How Dark Swan Has Changed Emma
“Being Dark Swan changed Emma drastically,” explained Morrison. “I think by being free to be bad, in a way, forced her to face some of her demons. Because she was able to overcome it and because she was able to make the right choice in the long run even though she did some bad things along the way, I think she was able to face some things in herself that she wasn’t able to face before.
“I think she’s free of certain things that she’s never been free of before, and I think she’s also humbled in a different way. She will never villains or people who have been villainous the same way again, because now she knows what it feels to be compelled to do those things. I think she’s going to have some more empathy and understanding that sometimes those decisions aren’t as clear-cut as they might seem.”
3. What’s Ahead for Regina and Robin
The good news from Lana Parrilla: “Their relationship is stronger than ever, and they can confront anything as long as they’re together.”
Added Sean Maguire: “It’s going to be a very memorable season. There’s going to be some stuff that I think is going to provoke a strong reaction — it depends on who you ask. Some people are going to be very upset about some stuff, and I think some people are going to be really happy about some stuff, but I can’t really say too much.”
4. Will Killian’s Half-Brother Play a Role?
Viewers learned in the midseason finale that Killian’s father had another son, so does that mean that storyline will come into play later this year?
“At the minute, no, but I think it would be fun to explore that and see what that’s about,” Colin O’Donoghue said. “We’ve seen Killian — or Hook, with young Baelfire — want to look after him and bring him under his wing — so it would be nice to explore that.”
5. What We Should Know About Captain Silver
O’Donoghue couldn’t say much about how Captain Silver comes into play on Once Upon a Time, but he did offer that “they definitely have a history and a relationship.”
As for Costas Mandylor joining the cast to play the character, O’Donoghue said, “He was fantastic. We’ve been so lucky to have the greatest actors come and play on the show. I came on the second season, but I still feel like I’m new to the show. I still count my blessings every day that I get a chance to do what I love to do and work with all these incredible actors.”
6. What Is Snow’s Relationship to Hercules
According to Josh Dallas, there’s some history between Snow and Hercules that we’re going to dive into this year.
“We all have pasts, and that was part of her past,” he said. “It could have been a first love of Snow’s; we don’t know. It was definitely someone who meant a lot to her, and I think that’s important to her character in terms of how she went forward into the world and brought her love eventually to Charming.”
There won’t be as much overt Snow and Charming romance in the present day during this half a season, but Dallas does take pride in the fact his and wife Ginnifer Goodwin’s characters do have the healthiest relationship on the show.
“There’s not a lot of time for their romance because there’s so much going on,” he said with a laugh. “Storybrooke’s in terrible danger. Hook gave up his life to save Storybrooke, so we’ve got to go help him out, we’ve got to go get him back. Our daughter’s in turmoil so we’ve got to help her out. We’ve still got a son. We have romance maybe in between those scenes.”
7. What’s Ahead for Henry
“Henry is of course the Author now, and even though he broke the quill, he still wants to be a hero, and he still wants to help in any way he can,” Jared Gilmore said.
Though there isn’t more Henry romance in the immediate future, Gilmore would love to see more as his character becomes more of an adult. “I can’t wait for us to be able to expand on that because it’s amazing, and it’s really fun to play and experience. It’s awesome,” he said.
8. We’ll Dive Deeper into Emma’s Backstory
More backstory is ahead for Emma, and Morrison said it will involve some new characters that she’s really excited to introduce on the show.
“Right now we’re doing a backstory episode for Emma, and that’s been fun because we’ve found some new characters — people I actually hadn’t worked with before — but who were really significant in her backstory,” she said. “That’s been really fun for me, because it’s also been a chance to explore a part of Emma we haven’t seen before. It’s sort of like between the abuse and before the walls, so she’s highly emotional in a way we haven’t seen her before. That’s also been a fun experience, and it’s been fun to bounce that off some new the actors as well.”
9. When We See Mulan, Red, Arthur & Co. Again
“We’ll come back in the finale, in the last few [episodes], to see them,” showrunner Eddy Kitsis said of the several supporting characters who Season 5 has lost touch with. “What we felt was towards the end of this season it was going to be a rush to finish it. We thought, ‘Why not?’ because we had the plans to bring them back.”
10. We Won’t See More of Lily in Season 5
There isn’t going to be a follow up with Lily (Agnes Bruckner) before the end of Season 6. “Lily’s not coming back this year,” Kitsis said, though showrunner Adam Horowitz promised, “We haven’t forgotten the story and we want to get to it.”
The reason Lily won’t pop back up is a logistical one. “The actress was pregnant this year,” Kitsis said, noting that the show is already working around the pregnancies of Emilie De Ravin and Ginnifer Goodwin. “Everyone literally is pregnant, including us,” Kitsis joked. “This is the most fertile show on TV.”
11. Will Hook and Emma Ultimately Have a Happy Ending?
Said O’Donoghue, “I think that will be something that will be explored at some point. I think they definitely are working hard at trying to create a relationship, Emma and Hook, with a lot of snow monster/fantastical objects. Hopefully it will work out for them.”
12. Could Zelena Find Her One True Love?
A lot of Season 5 plot points were off topic for Rebecca Mader: she couldn’t talk about what’s happening in Oz, or what we can expect from badass Dorothy, or what we’ll be learning about Zelena’s backstory when we see the younger version of her and Regina, or whether we’ll see Cora and Zelena come together with Barbara Hershey sticking around for a few episodes.
Mader could answer whether she thinks Zelena will ever get a one true love or if she’ll just stay wicked, saying, “Can you have both? I do want her to go through that journey and have that, because she’s never have anyone to love her. But now she has a baby, which is wonderful.”
Once Upon a Time: Season 5b premieres Sunday, March 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
